6th Grade Standards and Benchmarks

 

Language Arts

Standard #1 Uses the writing process to write clearly and concisely. Benchmark 1.6.1 Uses writing process to write paragraphs and compositions (Expand sentence structure, paragraph development, using prewriting strategies (CRISS), uses a variety of strategies to revise and edit. Benchmark 1.6.2 Writes in a variety of forms (Journals, business letters, research, creative writing, academic writing, and multi-media)

Standard #2 Uses grammatical and mechanical conventions in written compositions. Benchmark 2.6.1 Spells high frequency words. Benchmark 2.6.2 Uses and recognizes parts of speech (Reinforces nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Introduces conjunctions, pronouns, interjections, and prepositions). Benchmark 2.6.3 Uses correct capitalization (Magazines, newspapers, common and proper nouns, nationalities, and brand names). Benchmark 2.6.4 Uses correct punctuation (Reinforces commas, apostrophes, periods, abbreviations, and introduces the semicolon).

Standard #3 Uses a variety of print and non-print resources to locate and gather information. Benchmark 3.6.1 Uses sources appropriate to the task (Encyclopedia, Internet and online resources, Dictionaries, Periodicals, Almanacs, Thesaurus, and Non-Fiction Books). Benchmark 3.6.2 Uses strategies to gather information (CRISS, review bibliography).

Standard #4 Demonstrates competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process. Benchmark 4.6.1 Reads with comprehension (Review author's craft, Review main idea, Review supporting details, Introduce summarization, Review inferencing skills, Make predictions, Review genres, and Self select reading materials based on interest and reading level). Benchmark 4.6.2 Reads with fluency (Reads 141 words per minute, Introduce reading with expression, Practice reading/speaking with volume, Practice correct enunciation during reading/speaking). Benchmark 4.6.3 Uses a variety of strategies to increase vocabulary (CRISS, Context clues, Reinforce thesaurus, Introduce and analyze structure of the word: prefix, suffix, compound words, root words, and word origin. Introduce and analyze word meaning: synonym, antonym, homonym, multiple meanings. Recognize and understand key works in test instruction and questions). Benchmark 4.6.4 Identifies literary elements (Identify major/minor characters, setting, introduce plot, internal and external conflict, review point of view, foreshadowing, recognize simile and metaphors, and introduce theme.

Standard #5 Demonstrates competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning. Benchmark 5.6.1 Uses active listening skills (Faces speaker, uses eye contact, asks questions, and gives feedback). Benchmark 5.6.2 Organizes ideas for oral presentations (Includes content appropriate to the audience, uses notes or other memory aids, and summarizes main points). Benchmark 5.6.3 Uses verbal and non-verbal skills to communicate (Eye contact, facial expression, gestures, posture, pitch, volume, tone, word choice, and rate).

Math 

Standard #1 The student will understand the properties of the number concepts and performs the processes of computation. Benchmark 1.6.1 Understands equivalent forms of basic percents, fractions, and decimals and when one form or a number might be more useful than another. Benchmark 1.6.2 Adds and subtracts fractions.

Standard #2 The student will understand the properties of the concepts of measurement. Benchmark 2.6.1 Understands and manipulates the concepts of time. Benchmark 2.6.2 Understands the basic measurements of perimeter and area.

Standard #3 The student will understand the properties of the concepts of geometry. There are no 6th grade benchmarks for this standard.

Standard #4 The student will understand and apply properties of functions and algebra. Benchmark 4.6.1 Knows basic characteristics and features of the rectangle coordinate system.

Standard #5 The student will understand and apply the concepts of data analysis, probability, and statistics. Benchmark 5.6.1 Understands basic characteristics of measures of central tendency.

Standard #6 The student will use a variety of strategies in the problem solving process. Benchmark 6.6.1 Understands that there is no one right way to solve mathematical problems but there are different methods.

Science

Standard #1 The student will understand and apply the concepts of physical science. Benchmark 1.6.1 Knows that materials have different states, and some common materials such as water can be changed from one state to another by heating or cooling. Benchmark 1.6.2 Knows methods used to separate materials into their component parts.

Standard #2 The student will understand and apply the concepts of life science. Benchmark 2.6.1 Knows that multicellular organisms have a variety of specialized cells, tissues, organs and organ systems that perform specialized functions. Benchmark 2.6.2 Knows and can label cell parts and the basic functions they perform.

Standard #3 The student will understand and apply the concepts of Earth and Space science. Benchmark 3.6.1 Knows how features on Earth's surface are constantly changed by a combination of slow and fast processes. Benchmark 3.6.2 Knows how landforms are created through a combination of constructive and destructive forces.

Standard #4 The student will understand and apply the concept of science as an inquiry. Benchmark 4.6.1 Knows that there is no fixed procedure called the "scientific method", but that investigations involve systematic observations carefully collected, relevant evidence, logical reasoning and some imagination in developing hypotheses and explanations.

Social

Studies

Standard #1 The student will demonstrate knowledge of governments. Benchmark 1.6.1 Knows how diversity encourages cultural creativity.

Standard #2 The student will understand the impact of past history on current and future history. Benchmark 2.6.1 Understands that specific ideas had an impact on history. Benchmark 2.6.2 Understands the daily life, history, and beliefs of a country.

Standard #3 The student will understand and apply the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and principles of American democracy. There are no 6th grade benchmarks for this standard.

Standard #4 The student will utilize and understand information about human and physical features of places and regions. Benchmark 4.6.1 Uses map grids to plot absolute location. Benchmark 4.6.2 Uses thematic maps. Benchmark 4.6.3 Knows the approximate location of major continents, mountain ranges, and bodies of water on Earth.
