The Multiage Classroom: An Educational Choice
· The Nevada Multiage Community is a program choice within the larger Central Elementary. The approximate 190 students of the Multiage Community are part of the 620 students enrolled in Nevada's Central Elementary. Each year parents are given the opportunity to choose to enroll their child in the Graded Community or the Multiage Community.
Teachers and Students
· The Nevada Multiage Community has seven classroom teachers, resource teachers, a reading teacher, and guidance counselor assigned to the program. These teachers plan the instruction for the multiage students using a yearlong theme as an organizer. Efforts are made to coordinate the curriculum for the year with the art teacher, media specialist, and music teachers. Our students range in age from 6 to 11 years old. They are organized into classes of 20-25 students ages 6 to 9 years old and 8 to 11 years old.

Literacy Instruction
· Literacy instruction is a primary goal of Nevada's Multiage Program. The students are immersed in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and spelling from the first day of classes. A wide variety of books are available in the classroom for students to read. These are in addition to the materials available in the school's Library/Media Center. Phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence (phonics) is taught and practiced during both the reading and writing times of the day.
