Homework

Spelling

The regular procedure used in our spelling program begins by introducing the words on Monday. This is initially done through the pretests given on yellow paper. We will then correct them together as a class. The teachers will quickly look over their corrections. With limited time the teachers will correct them quickly. If you find a mistake on the yellow pretest sheet, please contact another student to find out what the word is, or have your child check at school on Tuesday.

Our regular spelling list will consist of 12 words. If your child misses two or less of the initial 12 words, they will then have the privilege of being challenged with additional reach out words. The children usually copy these words on the back side of the pretest, so please double check them for accuracy.

The children then take the yellow pretest sheets home to practice the words all week in preparation for the end of the week final test. On the final test the children will be asked to "write" the words, it is not wise to just practice orally all week. A combination of oral and written practice is the best. A good practice procedure to follow consists of the following:

LOOK at the word

SAY the word

SPELL the word

COPY the word

PICTURE the word

COVER the word and WRITE it

Returning the homework sheet at the end of the week will give an indication of your child's effort in spelling. By signing this sheet, you as a parent let me know that your child has successfully studied his/her words all week.

Reading

To help your child reach the second grade reading goal of 80 words per minute we encourage your child to read 20 minutes a minimum of three days a week. The reading time can consist of:

shared reading (taking turns reading aloud to each other)

someone reading to the child

the child reading aloud (alone or to someone)

the child reading silently

Homework sheets will be sent home weekly. Students need to record time spent reading and return the completed homework sheet each week.
