Finally, a group of the greatest
Nevada players of all-time cannot be
announced without the greatest Nevada
coach of all-time. Our unanimous choice
for this award is Coach Don King. Coach
King ran the Cub program from 1957-1962.
Over those seasons, the Cubs complied a
78-32 record. Coach King's 1961 and 1962
teams are considered by many to be
Nevada's finest. They compiled a 42-4
record over those seasons. Unfortunately,
there were not classifications in the
1960's so to get to a state tournament
meant playing large schools. In 1961 the
Cubs lost to Ames in the district final
and in 1962 lost to Des Moines Roosevelt
in the district finals as well. After
Nevada, Coach King went on to coach at Coe
College for four years, then at Washington
High School in Cedar Rapids. He was the
Coach at Washington from 1966-1993. His
accomplishments are staggering. He has
been named conference coach of the year
eight times, named district coach of the
year in 1969 by the National High school
Athletic coaches association, and was
nominated for National High School
basketball coach of the year in 1991. He
led eight teams to the state tournament
and is the Coach of the 1969 state
champion. He holds a career record of
537-352. He coached 20 all-staters, four
high school All-Americans, eighty of his
players went on to play college ball and
two were drafted into the NBA. He has
contributed in numerous basketball
publications and is not only a member of
the Nevada Hall of Fame, but also the
Cedar Rapids Washington hall of fame, the
Iowa High School Athletic Basketball hall
of fame as well as the University of
Northern Iowa Athletic Hall of fame.
