Bill Evans not only could be the best
basketball player to ever attend Nevada
High, but also one of the best to ever
play high school basketball in Iowa. A
1942 graduate, Bill Evans has too many
honors to name and his senior year proves
it. He was named First Team All-State by
the Iowa Daily Press and the Des Moines
Register, named the Most Outstanding
player of the 1942 State Basketball
Tournament and the Des Moines Register, in
1942, named him the best high school
basketball player of all time! Bill went
on to play college ball at Drake
University where he was an All Missouri
Valley Conference player four straight
years. In 1949 he was named to Look
Magazine's College All American team and
the state of Iowa Athlete of the Year.
After completing his senior year, he was
selected to the East/West College All Star
game which was played at Madison Square
Garden in New York City. Legendary
University of Kentucky coach Hank Iba
called Bill the best player from the West
team as well. Bill then coached and taught
in Carroll for 35 years. Bill received the
Carroll Community Service award in 1974,
and was inducted into the Iowa Basketball
referee Hall of Fame in 1980. He is also a
member of the Nevada Hall of Fame.
