EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY

The Nevada Community School District believes in early intervention to insure all students have the prerequisite skills in reading.  Since 2000, the district has set performance levels called benchmarks.  The chart below represents the percent of students in kindergarten through 3rd grade who achieved the benchmarks.

Annual Goal: Student performance will meet or exceed expectations set by the Nevada School District in the area of reading comprehension.  The goal will be to maintain or increase the percentage of the students in Kindergarten and 1st grade above the benchmarks for the identified pre-reading skills. The goal was met in kindergarten.

The goal for reading fluency is to have 90% of the students in each grade level proficient.  The benchmark for proficient is above each chart.

Early Literacy Goals:

Goal: To increase the percentage of students proficient using DIBELS benchmarks for oral fluency at each grade level. The focus will continue to be on early literacy strategies and the infusion of research-based strategies to improve studentsÕ reading skills.

Goal was met in 1st grade.
